Ortega Burgers

Honestly, I have gained a lot of weight with all of the testing and cooking and TASTING for cookbooks over the last few months. So, I made a commitment to my best friend, and to myself, to figure the nutritional facts for any new recipe I came up with...so here is the first one.

These only take about 10 minutes to make and they are super high in protein and super low in fat and carbs, but SUPER HIGH IN FLAVOR!

Ortega Burgers and a side of Tortilla Chips.  Ole!

The Recipe (makes 4 patties)
Ingredients:

1 cup of TVP granules
7/8 cup water
1 packet of Taco Seasoning
1/2 cup Wheat Gluten Flour
1/2 cup Salsa of Choice
1 tbsp Hot sauce (like Tapatio)

Directions:
Reconstitute TVP by placing it in a microwave safe bowl, pouring water over it, covering it TIGHTLY with plastic wrap and microwave on high for 5-6 minutes. Mix in taco seasoning, then mix in the flour, salsa and hot sauce. Let sit for about 20 minutes. (You may refrigerate it for later at this point if you want to.) Divide mixture into 4 equal parts. Form burger patties. Prepare as desired. They can be baked at 350 for about 15 minutes or until just crisp on the outsides, fried (in oil or non-stick spray) or grilled. If grilling, us a foil liner so they don't fall apart. Garnish with onions, jalapeno, sour cream, salsa and avocado. YUM!

Yield: 4 burgers

  2. Looks good..but i can't take spicy stuff..is there an equally tasty way of making these?

  3. So, I saw this recipe this afternoon and decided to make it for dinner...I just needed to run out and get the wheat gluten. Boy did that turn into an adventure. I ended up going to three different stores trying to find it (one was over half an hour away). Luckily I finally found it, made them, and they were yummy!! Perfect spiciness too, just the right kick.

  4. Do you think you could use something other than tvp granules for this? I'm really not a fan! Maybe some fake ground meat or tofu?

  5. I think if you want to sub the TVP i would go with "smart ground" or chopped up little bits of seitan. I think Tofu would be too fragile here. If you try it, let me know how it turns out!

  6. I might be a little bit late to try these since this recipe was posted a long time ago but the picture drew me in...they looked so crispy and tasty I just had to have one. I made them into hot dog shape so I could put them on a hot dog bun. We were having a party where the rest of them would be eating hot dogs is why I tried them this way and they are freaking awesome! I absolutely will be making these again and while we were eating them all I could think of was how I was going to use the leftovers as nacho "meat" but alas there were no leftovers because they were so good that we scarfed them all down. These are definitely yummy and I'm definitely buying this book when it hits the shelves!
